The opposition People's Progressive Party says its leadership and MPs are currently under surveillance by government operatives. In a statement issued on Monday the party said the surveillance is being conducted by persons who are not uniformed and it is being done both at their homes and as they go about their business.
It said that in addition, ranks of the Guyana Police Force Special Branch and now stationed outside of the party’s Freedom House, Robb Street headquarters.
The PPP also said it is unclear whether some of the persons doing the surveillance are members of law enforcement agencies as they are not outfitted in identifiable uniforms.
The party called on the law enforcement agencies and the joint services not to succumb to political dictates and directions and urged that they discharge their functions faithfully, professionally and with due regard to their oath of office.
The coalition government has spent millions of dollars acquiring sensitive eavesdropping and other surveillance equipment. Since coming to power the APNU+AFC has resuscitated several paramilitary organisation which in the past have been linked to murder and intimidation of opponents of the then PNC government. It has faced criticisms as many see these moves as a return to the days of the PNC dictatorship.
In 2016 GDF Sergeant Robert Pyle died tragically following a high-speed chase, which ensued during a bungled covert surveillance operation which targeted former NICIL Head Winston Brassington. It was later discovered that the Army Officer and his special team targeted the wrong people in a case of mistaken identity. The chase ended with a collision on Carifesta Avenue which claimed the lives of the GDF rank; his wife Stacy and Canter truck driver Linden Eastman.
