MINISTER of Finance Dr. Ashni Singh today launched Guyana’s 2011 Millennium Development Goals (MDG) Progress Report, eleven years after the signing of the Millennium Declaration, under which the Goals were agreed to by the international community.
The report took stock of the country’s progress on development, with specific reference to the MDGs.In his presentation he said that Guyana has made very good progress towards eradicating extreme poverty and hunger. According to the Minister, the country has met the target of halving the proportion of people who suffer from hunger, and has improved its performance in reducing poverty and increasing employment. The proportion of the population living in extreme poverty has declined from 28.7% in 1993 to 18.6% in 2006. While the overall unemployment rate fell from 11.7% in 1992 to 10.7% in 2006 and the percentage of youths who constitute the employed labour force increased from 8.7% to 15.8% over the same period.
