A policeman is at present under close arrest after he was caught in a car that was hijacked some three weeks ago.
Kaieteur News was told that the rank is currently at the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Headquarters, Eve Leary.
Reports are that on December 20 last the driver of the car HB6085, George Boyce, was working with a city taxi service when he received a call to make a pickup at the corner of Campbell Street and Stone Avenue.
Speaking with Kaieteur News yesterday, Boyce said he picked up a man who requested to go to South Ruimveldt.
According to him, while in the vicinity of Cane View Avenue the man whipped out a handgun and ordered him out of the car.
“He put a gun to my head and tell me to get out.”
According to Boyce, he complied and, after the man drove the car away, he went to the East La Penitence police Station where he made a report that his silver-gray Toyota AT 212 car was hijacked.
“I keep running to and from the station and them ain’t making no progress,” the taxi driver said.
He said that yesterday he was travelling along Parade Street when he noticed a car looking like his proceeding to the Public Relations Division of the Guyana Police Force.
“I follow the car and see the man stop and gone in the police compound. I then went for a traffic rank and he came with two other policeman and they arrest the man.”
Boyce said that the car number plate has been changed to PKK 6524 and the windows have been heavily tinted.
Much to his surprise, Boyce said, while at CID headquarters the man revealed that he is serving member of the police force.
According to Boyce, the policeman claimed that he rented the car from someone in Plaisance, East Coast Demerara.
Acting on his claim, several ranks proceeded to Plaisance where several persons were arrested and taken to CID.
A police source has since confirmed that the rank arrested is attached to the Tactical Services Unit and is indeed a serving member of the police force.
The source added that the rank is under close arrest as investigations continue."
