Domestic violence cannot be reduced by Legislation alone! Behavioural change is needed too!

Recently Guyana, like so many other countries, has seen an upsurge in violence as a result of domestic issues. Several persons have lost their lives as a result, while some are left with permanent scars and disfigurement.

This is despite the enactment of numerous domestic violence legislation and several changes in the procedure for investigating reports and public awareness sessions to educate persons on this issue.

It is a fact that abuse is a learnt behaviour and to effectively deal with the issue the government has enacted various forms of legislation along with the necessary facilities for compulsory counseling.

We here at Liveinguyana are of the view that this, however, will not guarantee the removal of this scourge from our society. Many of the more developed countries have some of the most progressive domestic violence laws and the results are the same.

Acts of domestic abuse could only be reduced by behavioural change. The society needs to work with the established institutions to help both the victims and perpetrators to seek and get help. This should not be a political issue.
