The AFC's vicious, racist attack on Joseph Hamilton must be condemned

Joseph Hamilton

Former PNC Member of Parliament, Joseph Hamilton's announcement that he has crossed over to the PPP/C was met with a vicious attack by the AFC. Several senior executives of that party have begun using Hamilton's association with the House of Israel to put fear into the minds of Indo Guyanese by telling them that Hamilton was part of the terrorist activities conducted by misguided members of that organization at the behest of Forbes Burnham. Hamilton was not part of the House of Israel leadership during that time neither was he actively involved in politics.

Commentators have described this act by Tarron Khemraj, Gerhard Ramsaroop, Sasenarine Singh and others as pandering to the sentiments of one particular ethnic group. They have also accused the AFC of 'saying one thing publicly but doing something totally different behind the scenes'. The AFC and others were vociferous in their condemnation when President Jagdeo urged his audience in Berbice earlier this year to remind the younger generation of how difficult life was under the PNC. For senior AFC officials to now engage in this kind of practice is an example of the hypocrisy of that party. All the persons of African ancestry who have now endorsed the PPP/C are being labeled 'house saves' by the AFC and PNC while Dr Van West Charles is being called a 'patriot'.
