It is improper for someone educated at the public expense to make a big fuss of being made to pay up.

Rovin Stanley

The Government is correct in it's stance as anybody who takes a student loan, study and then takes off to live overseas should be be made to pay back the entire sum. The 15 years repayment time is not applicable in this circumstance as it was designed for people who reside and contribute to the Guyana economy.
To take the loan then migrate and not repay is ripping off the poor people of Guyana.

And for those including Mr Stanley himself who may want to suggest that the issue here is selective and inflexible enforcement of a policy for purposes of harassment and punishment of political 'enemies', well, they have got it wrong.
Does the police catch all speeders or DWI ? No, but they charge those they catch. Selective or however they may wish to label it, the question is, was he wrongfully accused of owing the money for the purpose? Answer. No!

  2. When one acquire a student loan it is for them to get there education and return five years of that education to the country. Now if one should get there education at the public expense and then leave and go overseas they should indeed have to pay back the full amount.

  3. I'm am pretty sure that people are aware of the condition when they go to acquire a student loan. Now i don't see why it is hard for them to pay back the full amount of the loan when they did not stand by the condition of acquiring the loan.

  4. I am sure these persons who see it legal for a gov't to abuse their power this way have never stepped in to a university door. I know that Guyana has an emerging educated and middle class which will make a difference though.

  8. When one borrows a student loan they are terms and condition for payment if that person remains in Guyana, but from the time that person leaves the country the terms and condition changes.

  9. This is correct. I agree that he should repay the loan immediately instead of the standard 15 years since he is no longer residing in or contributing to the betterment of Guyana.

Student loans are meant to help Guyanese obtain higher levels of education so they are able to secure better jobs and functions for the betterment of Guyana. Its not to facilitate easy migration.

Mr. Stanley should wake up and stop trying to put a spin on the issue.

  10. Indeed these are the kind of people that make it bad for upcoming generations that may not be financially able to pay cash for studying at the university and may want to acquire a loan. The problem is not acquiring the loan, the problem comes when the time has arrived too pay back the borrowed sum. This is ridiculous at the fact that persons are well aware of the conditions of the loan before acquiring it. They sign and confirm every detail on the loan form and yet find it difficult and unfair to pay back... Nonsense! Also they make it bad on the person that stands guarantor for them that may have other children or relatives that may want to use their name for reference. Now because the system has recently changed to if there is an outstanding payment on the guarantor's name, then no one else can acquire a loan under his or her name. So Stanley needs to put this in his pipe and smoke it “Pay back the money you borrow or face public embarrassment as an example to those who may share your stupid and uneducated sentiments!”
