Significant inroads being made in fight against local drug trade as another Marijuana farm is destroyed

Law enforcement authorities are dealing serious blows to the local drug trade with the latest being the discovery and destruction of yet another marijuana farm. Police on Monday destroyed some 13 acres of cultivated marijuana plants at Hauraruni Creek, Soesdyke/Linden Highway.

Police spokesman Ivelaw Whittaker in a release on yesterday stated that approximately 15, 600 cannabis sativa plants ranging between 3 feet and 12 feet in height had been cultivated on the field.

Also destroyed in the operation were eight nurseries containing approximately 40,000 seedlings, three tarpaulin camps, 20 kilogrammes of dried cannabis sativa and 2 kilogrammes of cannabis seeds, Whittaker said.

Monday's eradication exercise follows last week's destruction of a 6-acre marijuana field at Banakari Swamp Road, Soesdyke/Linden Highway. Some 600 kilogrammes of dried marijuana, 40,000 seedlings, 30 kilogrammes of seeds and six camps were also destroyed in that operation. In June the authorities busted 394 kilogrammes of marijuana in an unopened container which had arrived in the country from Jamaica, aboard the m.v. Stadt Luneburg but not before 450lbs of cocaine were discovered concealed in fuel drums in a Bartica bust the same month.
