AFC must be condemned for using the suffering of the Haitian to score political points.

Also in this photo are Minister of Home Affairs Mr. Clement Rohee and PPP General Secretary and Member of Parliament Mr. Donald Ramotar.

As the news of a massive earthquake measuring 7.0 on the Richter scale and centered approximately 15 kilometres from Haiti's capitol city, Port-au-Prince, President Jagdeo was quick to announce that his Government would commit US$1M towards assistance. He also organised a meeting of various stakeholders which included the opposition political parties, religious organisations and non-governmental organisations (NGOs), at the Office of the President to coordinate a national effort by Guyana to render the assistance needed. All of the stakeholders committed themselves to the national effort despite their partisan interests with the exception of the AFC, who decided to commence and effort of their own.

The commitment of the various political, religious as well as civil society players, notably, the leader of the PNC/R Robert Corbin, for putting aside their differences in support of the cause must be lauded, while the AFC must be chided for their selfish and anti-nationalist approach to the plight of the Haitian people. All right minded Guyanese should ignore calls for assistance by them, who by their actions are seeking to use the suffering of the Haitian people for political mileage instead of truly demonstrating a deep sense of compassion for the plight being faced by those affected.

  1. If the AFC cannot look pass the political differences and rise above it in the name of humanity, then how can they lead a nation? Even Corbin should be commended for his party's unselfish position of being part of a wider effort of the Guyanese people. The AFC by going alone has shown the attitude of a spoilt brat.
